What Zed found at one plant
Digester volatile-solids reduction had slipped to 44.8%, below the 50% the digester should be holding. Nothing on the surface looked wrong: no threshold had been crossed, no alarm had tripped, and day-to-day operation looked routine.
The driver was retention time. Feed to the digester had been creeping up, gradually shortening the time sludge spent inside it, meaning less volatile-solids destruction. Zed calculated retention time every day from feed flow and digester volume, instead of waiting on the periodic lab VS test, so it caught the downward trend about three weeks before the next scheduled test, time enough to bring feeding back in line and recover the number.
