The digital twin
A model of your plant, from your own paperwork
A model is only useful if it knows the things that sensor data alone can't tell you: that this train has the older membranes, that the ammonia limit tightens in April, that you don't clean during a production run. Zed builds it from what you already have on file, in four kinds of input.
Plant details
Type, design capacity, commissioning year, shift pattern, main processes. Your source water and where the effluent goes. Your permit limits, your agencies, your performance targets, your maintenance rules, your seasonal patterns. This is what tells Zed what your numbers are supposed to be, and when.
Sensors
Every tag, with its unit and its operating limits, and what it's actually used for at your plant. That's what lets Zed pick the right signal when you ask about a process rather than a tag number.
Assets
Your equipment, with parent relationships, P&ID tags, criticality, manufacturer, model, serial. So a reading traces back to the equipment that produced it, and up to whatever that equipment sits under.
Documents
SOPs, O&M and OEM manuals, P&IDs, PFDs, design specs, commissioning reports. Anything you upload, Zed can learn from. It's how what's in the binder becomes something Zed can use.

From the audit of a large municipal wastewater plant. Volatile-solids reduction was running at 44.8% against the 50% the digester should be holding, and nothing had alarmed.

What Zed calculated
Retention time, every day, from cumulative feed and digester volume. Then it scored how consistent the feeding actually was. Neither number comes off an instrument. Both came out of data the plant already had.
What Zed recommended
Hold digester feed at about 93,000 gallons a day, cut the day-to-day variation in feed volume by roughly 40%, and flag it whenever projected retention time is heading below 30 days.
The impact
A compliance parameter the plant was quietly losing, back under control. No new equipment, no capital, and no waiting on the next lab test to find out.

UV dose drops going unmonitored
Dose reductions were occurring between compliance samples with nothing watching for them, leaving pathogen exposure unmeasured in the gaps. Add a dedicated UV dose monitor that flags drops as they happen.

Digester chemistry sampled weekly, and only on one of two
Six souring events on record, each developing five to seven days before weekly lab work caught it, with no chemistry monitoring at all on the second digester. Track the volatile acids to alkalinity ratio daily and flag when lab data goes stale.

No tiered response before bypass
Bypass eliminates biological treatment above 6 MGD, and BOD and enterococcus exceedances cluster in high-flow events. Classify flow into tiers with a defined action at each threshold.

TOC removal declining toward the DBP floor
Removal efficiency fell from 52% to under 30% across the year while treated TOC stayed in spec, so nothing looked wrong day to day. Track percent removal as a compliance metric with its own floor, and correct coagulant dose against the trend.

Individual filter turbidity masked by the combined reading
A filter returning to service produced a 2 NTU spike against a 0.04 to 0.09 NTU baseline; combined effluent stayed compliant only through dilution across the other filters. Monitor individual filter effluent on ripening with a trigger-aware alert.

Nickel exceedance traced to a failed mixer
A failed impeller left buffer-tank pH swinging between 2.8 and 13.8, metals precipitation lost control, and nickel reached 150% of the discharge limit. Watch buffer pH stability as a leading indicator between monthly lab samples.

Membrane fouling caused by upstream biological underperformance
Aeration achieved 46% COD reduction against 70 to 80% expected, pushing UF feed COD 35% over its limit and forcing weekly CIPs instead of monthly. Correct the biological stage rather than cleaning the membranes harder.

Biofouling progressing under a rising antiscalant dose
Specific flux fell while feed pressure rose and salt rejection held, which is a biofouling signature rather than scaling, and dose had been raised above design basis in response. Clean on the fouling trend instead of dosing through it.

RAS recycle failure visible in anoxic ORP
Anoxic ORP sat at −900 mV for 337 hours while RAS flow to that train read zero, indicating a pump, valve or meter failure. Correlate RAS flow with anoxic ORP so a recycle failure is identified within hours.

No written decision rules for CIP, dosing or tank switching
These were set by operator judgement, with no recorded rule and no benchmark after a change. Capture the rules operators already apply and embed them as monitored triggers.

Pre-treatment breakthrough driving RO cleaning frequency
Cleaning went from quarterly to fortnightly on four of five trains, caused by a damaged seal on one microfiltration train passing particles into the shared filtrate tank. Monitor MF resistance and feed flow across the whole pre-treatment fleet.

Rising first-stage pressure drop across every train
Salt rejection and recovery looked healthy while first-stage pressure drop rose 31 to 90% on all five trains and available capacity settled at three. Focus monitoring on pre-treatment and cleaning interval rather than on the membranes.

What you need
